SUPERGA 3D CONFIGURATOR
CUSTOMIZATION AND 3D PRINTING PROTOTYPING OF THE SUPERGA 2570
Client: Basicnet Spa
challenge
Customize and prototype the Superga 2570.
solution
Cloud-based 3D customization platform with direct output for the 3D printing of the shoe's custom design.
Superga’s 3D configurator is a B2B platform that supports the entire design customisation cycle of a legendary product.
Conceived specifically for designers rather than for technicians, a set of user-friendly 3D tools to automate otherwise complex operations, such as the customisation of an industrial product like the Superga 2570.
The Superga 3D configurator is a B2B platform that can digitally support the whole design customization cycle of a legendary shoe: the Superga 2570.
Let’s find out the main features of a tool that can make a series of rather complex operations, such as those related to the mass customization of an industrial product, absolutely user friendly.
A 3D CLOUD-BASED CONFIGURATOR CONCEIVED FOR DESIGNERS
The Superga 2570 3D configurator is a production tool conceived for designers which allows them to work on many details that are typical of design with a greater degree of freedom than that generally offered to the end-user. The availability on Cloud Architecture makes the Superga 2570 3D configurator a flexible tool which can be used by designers around the world to edit and share any custom version of the shoe at any time.
CREATION OF THE 3D MODEL
The digital model in 3D is the result of a series of fabric simulations generated from the paper patterns supplied by the company with the aim of obtaining the highest level of realism possible and of independently managing all the parts to customize and send to production. In fact each component of the shoe can be customized according to a series of options that are predefined and customized by the designer, who can import additional textures in addition to those made available.
FROM THE 3D MODEL TO THE PROTOTYPE WITH A SIMPLE CLICK
The 3D configurator automates all the steps that are necessary for the realization of an aesthetic prototype starting from a 3D model. Once the customization process has been defined, all the designer needs to do is to click on “Request 3D Printing” to obtain a 1:1 scale version of the shoe.
Based on similar principles, the configurator is able to process a summary technical sheet with all the customized parts in real time and generate a production working drawing with the projection of the customized images on the paper patterns.

Color printing in four colors (Colorjet) allows you to get an aesthetic prototype in a very short time without special needs in terms of post production. (Credits Protocube Reply)
THE ADVANTAGES OF A “3D PRINT READY” CONFIGURATOR
A tool such as the Superga 2570 3D configurator enables the digitalization of the product customization cycle, providing the company with a series of objective advantages.
Realistic Preview – Real-time rendering allows you to have a realistic three-dimensional preview of the shoe which can provide a much more concrete feedback than two-dimensional sketches. This avoids the production of multiple preliminary prototypes.
“Error Free” Design – The digital 3D model is the digital twin of the shoe. The configurator defines all product constraints and specifications so as to make design errors impossible. The designer can only execute feasible operations.
Time to Market reduction – Faster choices and rapid prototyping processes make it possible to drastically reduce the development time of a product. In the specific case, a whole cycle used to take about three months. The digitization of the shoe customization processes makes the same results possible within three days.
Flexibility in the management of the product catalog – Any variation or modification on the model in production is easily updated, at any time, even on the digital model in the configurator.
Implementation of new 3D printing technologies – It is possible to expand the range of prototyping materials and technologies, defining new export presets for 3D printing. It is an absolutely transparent process for the designer, who is offered new creative possibilities without increasing complexity in the operations that pertain to them.
Total cost reduction – The factors expressed in the previous points translate into a significant overall reduction in costs.
